PICTURES OF HURRANS THROUGH THE AGES

Hurrans looks forward, with great pride, to its centenary in 5 years time. That's one hundred years of gardening expertise and horticulatural experience. But how did it all start?

THE EARLY YEARS
Alfred Hurran came to Gloucester in 1909 at the age of 25. With only £10 in his pocket, he took on a small piece of land with three derelict greenhouses near the centre of Gloucester for the then considerable sum of £80 a year. With the help of his wife they set about licking the place into shape.

The following year they took on a stall in Gloucester market where they sold the crops they grew - look out for the 'Alfred Hurran' name on the dial of the market clock.

The business prospered and Alfred Hurran soon became a pillar of the local community. He was a very keen supporter of Gloucester City Football Club and many other local activities, most of which were of a charitable nature.

Alfred had four sons. The youngest son, Stewart, struck on garden centres as the up-and-coming business to be in. At the time floristry, was the principal activity of the business, with six shops in the Gloucester, Stroud and Cheltenham area. Indeed the Cheltenham shop was one of the very first Interflora members.
